The red-letter days of life are few, Bringing splendours we quickly miss, And we seem to plod a whole week through For a prize of one hour's bliss.
So many days drift dully along, As if just marking time Between one peak where we sang joy's song And the next we're allowed to climb.
How dreary we find the blanks between Each living vital chord! The throb of harmonies that have been Is lost - life's pulse unheard.
Yet the common days have a solid worth: In them we are tested and trained, Through the mundane task and the seeming dearth, To be fit for the summits gained.
